In other news, those of you going to the Playboy party should start getting excited. Kenan Bell + Calvin Harris should be a serious combination. If you got an invite, that is. If not, start getting bummed (I was in this camp last year). Thanks to Playboy, Plus One, and whatever other entities are paying for us to throw down for free on Thursday. And if you’re gonna be rolling through, hit me up so we can drink Playboy’s whiskey together.

The fact that I’ve more or less stopped reading blogs coupled with my general apathy has led to a serious dearth of posts here on Panda Toes. But every once in a while a big track from a big name drops and I just can’t help but post it. This time around it’s Simian Mobile Disco’s “Synthesise.”

Dudes were (predictably) one of the first electronic acts I was into, and to this day I still try to find ways to include their “It’s the Beat” in my sets. Tired? Maybe. Still awesome? Yea, definitely. Anyways, fellow Grinder Alex Sushon (a.k.a. Bok Bok) helped make the video for the cut, and it’s glorious. The song reminds me of an old, ex-religious, Southern gentleman crooning in a whiskey-induced state. But in the club. On the other hand, I have no idea what the video reminds me of; I just know I like it a whole lot.

I’m sure 100% of the Panda Toes readership is familiar with Fever Ray. Half of the Knife, etc. What’s more, you’ve probably caught wind of her latest single (the astoundingly beautiful “When I Grow Up”) and its video. But what y’all might not know about is the Dan Lissvik remix. It blew me away immediately when I heard it a handful of days ago, and now I’ve got it for y’all to enjoy. I’d love to describe it, but I simply don’t have the words (generally I don’t write about songs ’cause I’m lazy, but this time I have the will but no way). So with that said, let your ears feast:

Whoa. Whoa. So everyone who’s ever written for Panda Toes loves Ocelot. It’s a fact. Dan’s didn’t realize there was more to life than the Game and Glasses Malone until the Ocelot boys smacked him upside the head with their remix of Robyn’s “Be Mine.” As for me. Well. Have you heard their take on Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia”? Crazy, right?

Well today’s our (and your) lucky day – one of the dudes from Ocelot (don’t ask me which one – I don’t do names) will be DJing at Dance Your Face Off’s weekly Wednesday party tonight. As per usual: Fallout Lounge – 835 Exposition Avenue (in Dallas). And if you can’t make it tonight, be sure to stop by at the D.Y.F.O. party next Friday in Austin (where the both of ‘em will be mixing). Cheap drinks at the former, free ones at the latter. (I’ll be DJing at both events.)

Resurrected Panda Toes contributor Josh Stansfield may or may not have written up Little Boots just yesterday, but does that I mean I can’t post up a track of hers today? No. At least, not in my book. All that tells me is that we here at Panda Toes are a wee bit obsessive. And let’s face it – that’s been obvious for quite some time now. So, let’s get to it.

The young lady Victoria Hesketh is preparing to release (or so I assume) two new jams: “Earthquake” and “New in Town.” Luckily for us, she, IAMSOUND, or some other lovely individual or group decided to toss out some choice remixes for bloggers and DJs to share and play. You can pick up tracks from well-recognized names such as Drop the Lime and Fred Falke with our friends at Discobelle and Disco Dust. There’s also a version from new Panda Toes favorites Dekker & Johan with one of our first blogger buds, Paul at Hate Something Beautiful. My favorite, however, is a remix by some chap named Clap Mike. The vocal stutters aren’t overwhelming in the least, the instrumentals are brilliantly funky, and there’s just enough bounce to keep things lively without being a generic banger. In other words, this dude (whoever he is) is killin’ it. That is all.

We here at Panda Toes have been Calvin Harris fans for a long, long minute now. The summer after my freshman year of college I unexpectedly received an advance of his I Created Disco and, though I’d never heard of the dude, decided one morning that the album would provide the soundtrack to my trek to Warner Bros. It was fantastic. It still is fantastic. My new found obsession (and the obsessions of my fellow writers) soon led to a slew of posts; we interviewed him, attended his show, and generally hype anything and everything he does.

So life was good when Harris debuted his new single “I’m Not Alone” on one of the gazillions of B.B.C. shows that love dance music. It may or may not be enormously cheesy, but that certainly doesn’t take away from how delightful it is. Seriously. The video features Calvin measuring up a handful of chicitas as he prepares to pick them apart, and their facial expressions show that they’re clearly not happy about it. However, ain’t nobody pouting; all these nice young ladies realize that they’re rocking out to a serious tune, so they just keep on dancing. Yea – it’s that good.

Like I said: tune. And just for fun, here’s a nice little track I just picked up from our friends at Kiss Atlanta. Very smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable.

While we’re on the topic of giving big ups to Nick Catchdubs, I’ve gotta give credit to the Fools Gold label co-founder for beating us to the punch on this epic cover. Aight. So it’s been a minute since I last posted, so I figured I should come back with something strong. And when I saw that the dude Nick Catchdubs was sharing a new track from his upcoming mix tape Wizard Of Kizz, I jacked it and got to typing. (And in case you missed it, here’s the first mix tape featuring Catchdubs and Izza Kizza.)

The best thing about this may or may not be the fact that it features David Banner. I’ll be honest – I wasn’t a fan of the dude till last year’s SXSW. “Play?” No thanks. But then I caught him at the Fader Fort (note to Fader: please release your ‘09 lineup) and realized that he was ridiculously awesome. And his work on the fabulous “Family Reunion” wasn’t half bad, either. So I assumed that working with one of the hottest rappers of the day as well as an established taste maker would surely lead to heat. And it did. And here it is:

EDIT: I’m stupid. So this post definitely reads as though Izza Kizza is just some special guest on a David Banner and Nick Catchdubs production. But of course this isn’t the case. In fact, it’s Banner who’s the guest on the Izza Kizza and Nick Catchdubs effort. So here I am trying to clarify that though I support what both David Banner and Catchdubs are doing in a big way, this post is all about Izza Kizza (who had somehow eluded mention on Panda Toes until now).

Oh. And I couldn’t find a list of Izza Kizza’s tour dates anywhere, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be rocking out at SXSW. Be sure to catch him if you’re in Austin the week of the 18th. There’s a reason the dude got people talkin’ at CMJ.

When speaking (blogging) about La Roux and her sure-but-steady takeover of the “electro darling” spot, it’s hard not to draw on obvious similarities to Panda Toes darling Little Boots or everyone’s darling Lily Allen, so I’m going to just avoid talking about her altogether and instead focus on my recent new obsession, Skream.

The dude, along with co-stunner Benga, has been absolutely taking over the dubstep scene and introducing it to a new generation of listeners that are getting a little fed up with the current state of the electro music. Need proof? Check out the absolutely devastating mix he did for Mishka. Need more proof? Check out this incredible rework he did of La Roux’s “In For The Kill”. Long time, no blog. My bad. I’d like to say that I got out in the real world and accomplished remarkable things, but we all know that’d be an outlandish lie. Y’all remember the dude DJ Johnny Bravvo? Remember his Kind of a Big Deal mix (see: below)? Well, the lad hooked me up with a gig at Austin’s Pure Ultra Lounge. In the words of a friend, it’s the kind of place where people “like it when a song tells them what to do.” Which some DJs may not like, but I thoroughly enjoyed. Once I got over the fact that my CDJs were on a relatively thin surface with nothing (other than friction) to keep them from plummeting three stories if nudged, I had a blast. Props to Pure – be sure to check it out on Saturdays when Johnny Bravvo is DJing.
